Glarus is the capital of the canton of Glarus in eastern Switzerland. Situated in a valley surrounded by impressive Alpine mountains, including the distinctive Glärnisch massif, the town has a rich industrial heritage dating back to the textile industry of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The historic town center, largely rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1861, features uniform Classical and Neo-Classical architecture that gives it a unique character. Glarus maintains strong cultural traditions, including the open-air assembly known as "Landsgemeinde," one of Switzerland's oldest forms of direct democracy. The town also serves as a gateway to various outdoor activities and is known for its local cheese variety "Glarner Schabziger" and other culinary specialties.
