Green Island is a coral cay located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, approximately 27 kilometers offshore from Cairns in Queensland, Australia. The island spans 15 hectares of land and is surrounded by 710 hectares of coral reef.
Known for its unique position as one of the few coral cays with a rainforest, Green Island has played a significant role in the development of Great Barrier Reef tourism since the 1930s. The island is of cultural significance to the local Guru-Gulu Gungandji Aboriginal people, who traditionally used it as a fishing ground. Today, the island hosts various cultural and natural attractions, including marine research facilities and interpretive centers that help visitors understand the delicate ecosystem of the Great Barrier Reef.
