Grein is a small historic town situated on the banks of the Danube River in Upper Austria. First mentioned in documents from 1147, this picturesque municipality is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and cultural heritage.
The town is home to the oldest municipal theater in Austria, the Stadttheater Grein, which has been in continuous operation since 1791 and maintains much of its original baroque architecture. Grein's historical significance is also marked by the presence of the Greinburg Castle, which sits prominently above the town and represents one of the most important riverside castles along the Upper Danube.
The town's location along the Danube has historically made it an important stop for river trade and continues to be a notable point of interest along the Danube cultural route.
