Hasankeyf was an ancient city located along the Tigris River in southeastern Turkey. The site had a rich history spanning multiple civilizations including Roman, Byzantine, Arab, and Ottoman periods, with evidence of human settlement dating back at least 12,000 years. The city was notable for its medieval architecture, cave dwellings, and archaeological significance.
However, in 2020, most of the historic site was submerged due to the completion of the Ilisu Dam project. Before the flooding, many historical artifacts and monuments were relocated to New Hasankeyf, including the 15th-century El Rizk Mosque and parts of the medieval bridge.
Today, while the original settlement lies underwater, the archaeological museum in New Hasankeyf preserves and displays the cultural heritage of this historically significant site.
