Hingham is a historic coastal town located on the South Shore of Massachusetts, approximately 15 miles southeast of Boston. Established in 1633, the town has preserved much of its colonial heritage, particularly evident in its well-maintained historic district along Main Street, which is known locally as "Lincoln Street" and features some of the finest examples of early American architecture. The town was named after Hingham, Norfolk in England, from where many of the original settlers came.
The community has long valued its cultural heritage and maintains several historical sites and museums. Hingham's rich maritime history is reflected in its harbor area, which played a significant role in the town's development as a shipbuilding center during the colonial period. Today, the town combines its historical character with modern amenities, serving as both a residential community and a cultural destination. The presence of the Hingham Historical Society and various preserved buildings provides visitors with opportunities to explore New England's colonial past and maritime heritage.
