Johanngeorgenstadt is a historic mining town located in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) of Saxony, Germany, near the Czech border. Founded in 1654 by Protestant refugees from Bohemia, the town was named after the Saxon Elector Johann Georg I. The city's development was closely tied to mining, particularly silver and uranium ore, which shaped its cultural and economic history.
During the GDR period, the town was an important center for uranium mining operated by the Soviet-German company SDAG Wismut. Today, Johanngeorgenstadt preserves its mining heritage through various historical sites and maintains its traditional Ore Mountain crafts and customs, including the famous wooden Christmas decorations and mining traditions. The town's location in the Ore Mountains also makes it a destination for winter sports enthusiasts.
