Kirishima is a city located in Kagoshima Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan. The city was established in 2005 through the merger of several smaller municipalities and takes its name from the nearby Kirishima mountain range, an area of active volcanoes that has been designated as the Kirishima-Yaku National Park.
The region has deep cultural significance in Japanese mythology, as it is said to be where Ninigi-no-Mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, descended to Earth. Today, Kirishima combines this rich historical heritage with modern development, being known for its hot springs (onsen), traditional shrines, and natural landscapes. The city has also developed as an industrial center, particularly in the field of electronics manufacturing, while maintaining its cultural identity through various festivals and traditional arts.
