Koyasan, also known as Mount Koya, is a sacred mountain in Wakayama Prefecture and one of Japan's most important religious centers. Founded in 816 by the Buddhist monk Kukai (posthumously known as Kobo Daishi), it serves as the headquarters of the Shingon school of Japanese Buddhism.
The mountain-top temple town features over 100 temples, including the famous Kongobuji Temple, the head temple of Shingon Buddhism. The area is also home to Okunoin, Japan's largest cemetery, where Kobo Daishi is believed to rest in eternal meditation.
Besides its religious significance, Koyasan is known for its traditional temple lodgings (shukubo) where visitors can experience Buddhist monastery life, including participating in morning prayers and eating traditional vegetarian Buddhist cuisine (shojin ryori). The entire sacred site was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004 as part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range."
