Magdalena is a historic village located in Socorro County, New Mexico. The community was established in the 1880s as an important mining town and cattle-driving terminus of the "Magdalena Stock Driveway." This trail was used to move livestock from the San Augustin Plains to Socorro, earning Magdalena the nickname "Trail's End."
The town's name comes from a peak in the nearby Magdalena Mountains, which early Spanish settlers thought resembled the profile of a woman's face - specifically that of Mary Magdalene. While its mining and ranching heyday has passed, Magdalena maintains its small-town character and serves as a gateway to the Very Large Array radio telescope facility. The village preserves its Western heritage through historic buildings along its main street, which reflect its past as a vibrant mining and ranching community.
