Marles-les-Mines is a commune located in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. As its name suggests, the town has a significant mining heritage, having been an important part of the Nord-Pas de Calais Mining Basin. This industrial past has shaped both the landscape and the cultural identity of the town.
The mining activity, which was particularly intense during the 19th and early 20th centuries, has left visible traces in the architecture and urban planning of the commune, including characteristic miners' housing estates known as 'corons'. Today, while the mines have closed, the town preserves its industrial heritage while adapting to contemporary times. The mining basin area, including Marles-les-Mines, has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2012, acknowledging its historical and cultural significance.
