Mason is the county seat of Mason County, located in the heart of Texas Hill Country. This small, historic town was established in 1858 and named after Fort Mason, a former military post that protected frontier settlers. The town reflects the rich German heritage of many of its early settlers, which is still evident in some of its architecture and local traditions.

Mason's historic downtown square, centered around its classic courthouse built in 1909, preserves much of its 19th-century character. The area is known for its natural beauty, including the nearby Llano River, and its geological significance as part of the Llano Uplift, which has made it a center for topaz mining – Texas's state gem. While small in size, Mason maintains its cultural identity through various local events and historical preservation efforts.
