Matsushima is a historic town located in Miyagi Prefecture, known for its bay which is considered one of Japan's Three Great Views (Nihon Sankei). The bay contains around 260 small islands covered in pine trees, creating a distinctive natural landscape that has inspired artists and poets for centuries.
The area has significant cultural importance, being home to Zuiganji Temple, a Zen Buddhist temple dating back to 828 CE, which was later rebuilt in the 17th century under the patronage of Date Masamune, the powerful feudal lord of the region. The town has successfully preserved its traditional architecture and cultural heritage while developing as a modern tourist destination.
The local culture is deeply influenced by its maritime setting, with seafood playing a central role in its culinary traditions.
