Newtongrange is a former mining village located in Midlothian, approximately 9 miles southeast of Edinburgh. The village grew significantly during the 19th century with the development of the Lady Victoria Colliery, which was one of the finest surviving Victorian collieries in Europe.

Today, this historic coal mine has been transformed into the National Mining Museum Scotland, serving as a testament to the area's rich industrial heritage. The village retains much of its original mining community character, with rows of miners' cottages and community buildings that reflect its strong connection to Scotland's coal mining past. The local Dean Tavern, established in 1899, remains a unique example of a "Gothenburg pub" - a Victorian-era social enterprise where profits were returned to the community.
