Nihonmatsu is a historic city located in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The city is known for its well-preserved feudal castle, Nihonmatsu Castle (also known as Kasumiga Castle), which was originally built in 1414 and sits atop Mount Hōmei. The castle ruins and its grounds remain an important cultural landmark and provide insight into Japan's samurai history.
Nihonmatsu has maintained many of its traditional customs and is particularly famous for its annual Chochin Matsuri (Lantern Festival) in October, which dates back over 400 years. The city also showcases the region's rich ceramic traditions, with several pottery workshops continuing centuries-old techniques.
Despite being affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, Nihonmatsu has shown resilience in preserving its cultural heritage while adapting to modern times.
