Nötsch im Gailtal is a small municipality located in the Gailtal valley of Carinthia, Austria. The town is particularly known for its historical significance in Austrian art history as the birthplace of the Nötsch Circle (Nötscher Kreis), an important group of artists that formed in the early 20th century.
This artistic community, which included prominent painters such as Sebastian Isepp, Franz Wiegele, and Anton Kolig, made significant contributions to Austrian expressionist painting. The picturesque Alpine setting of Nötsch, surrounded by the Carnic Alps and the Gailtal Alps, provided inspiration for many of these artists' works. The area's rich cultural heritage is complemented by its traditional Alpine architecture and the preservation of local Carinthian customs.
