Osawatomie is a historic city located in Miami County, Kansas, United States. The city's name is a combination of the Osage Native American tribe and Watomie Creek.
Osawatomie holds significant historical importance, particularly from the pre-Civil War era when it was a center of anti-slavery activism. The city was notably involved in "Bleeding Kansas," the violent conflict between pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers in the 1850s. John Brown, the famous abolitionist, made Osawatomie his base of operations and fought in the Battle of Osawatomie in 1856.
Today, the city maintains several historic sites and buildings that preserve its cultural heritage, including the John Brown Museum State Historic Site. The community continues to honor its role in American history while maintaining its small-town character.
