Reggio Calabria, commonly known as Reggio, is the largest city in the Calabria region of southern Italy. Located at the "toe" of the Italian peninsula, it sits on the Strait of Messina, facing Sicily. The city has ancient Greek origins, founded in the 8th century BC as "Rhegion."
Today, Reggio Calabria serves as an important cultural and economic center, known for its remarkable archaeological heritage and art collections. The city is particularly famous for housing the Riace Bronzes, two ancient Greek bronze statues discovered in 1972, which are displayed in the National Archaeological Museum of Magna Graecia. The historic center features notable examples of Liberty-style architecture, rebuilt after the devastating 1908 earthquake. Along its waterfront, the Lungomare Falcomatà promenade is lined with rare botanical species and offers views across to Sicily.
