Safranbolu is a historic town in northern Turkey, renowned for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture and urban design. The town's name derives from 'saffron' and 'polis' (city), as it was an important trading center for saffron spice during the Ottoman period.
The historic part of the town, known as Çarşı, features hundreds of old Ottoman houses, mansions, and public buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. These structures showcase the typical Ottoman architecture with their distinctive wooden frames, red-tiled roofs, and overhanging upper floors. The town's historical significance and exceptional preservation led UNESCO to declare it a World Heritage Site in 1994.
Safranbolu was also an important stop on the ancient Silk Road trade route, which contributed to its cultural diversity and architectural richness. Today, many of the traditional houses have been converted into museums, hotels, and restaurants, allowing visitors to experience the authentic Ottoman urban lifestyle.
