Seneca Rocks is a distinctive geological formation located in Pendleton County, West Virginia. This prominent landmark rises nearly 900 feet above the North Fork River and consists of white Tuscarora quartzite. The rocks have played a significant role in both natural and cultural history of the region.
Native Americans were the first known people to inhabit the area, and the formation later became important for military training during World War II when the U.S. Army used it to train West Virginia National Guard members in mountain warfare. Today, Seneca Rocks is part of the Monongahela National Forest and serves as one of the premier rock climbing destinations in the eastern United States. The area features a Discovery Center that helps visitors understand the geological, natural, and cultural heritage of the region.
The surrounding community maintains strong connections to traditional Appalachian culture, with local crafts and music still playing important roles in the area's cultural identity.
