South Amana is one of seven historic villages that make up the Amana Colonies, a National Historic Landmark located in Iowa County, Iowa. Established in 1856, it was part of a communal society formed by German Pietists who settled in Iowa seeking religious freedom.
The village, like the other Amana Colonies, maintained a self-sufficient lifestyle with communal living until 1932. South Amana preserves significant examples of traditional German-American architecture and craftsmanship, reflecting the community's cultural heritage. The village was known for its woolen mill, farming operations, and careful preservation of traditional crafts.
Today, South Amana continues to be an important cultural site that helps tell the story of 19th-century communal living and German-American immigration in the American Midwest.
