Sumgayit is Azerbaijan's third-largest city, located on the Caspian Sea about 31 kilometers northwest of the capital Baku. Founded in the 1940s as a Soviet industrial center, the city has evolved significantly over the decades.

While historically known for its industrial heritage, Sumgayit has been transforming into a modern urban center with growing cultural significance. The city features several parks, cultural centers, and educational institutions, including Sumgayit State University. Despite its industrial roots, the city has been developing its cultural infrastructure, with various venues for artistic expression and cultural activities.
