Sutherland Springs is a small unincorporated community located in Wilson County, Texas, approximately 30 miles southeast of San Antonio. The community was established in the 1850s and named after John Sutherland Jr., one of the early settlers in the area. Initially, the town grew around its mineral springs, which were believed to have healing properties and attracted visitors in the late 19th century.

Today, Sutherland Springs is a close-knit rural community with a population of several hundred residents. The town gained national attention in 2017 due to a tragic incident at the First Baptist Church, which led to the creation of a memorial to honor the victims. The community maintains its historical roots through preserved structures and continues to be an example of small-town Texas life.
