Terlingua is a ghost town located in Brewster County, Texas, near the Mexican border and Big Bend National Park. Originally established as a mercury mining community in the late 1880s, the town flourished during the early 20th century when it was one of the leading producers of quicksilver (mercury) in the United States. After the decline of mining operations in the 1940s, most of the population left, leaving behind historic ruins and structures that now attract visitors interested in the American Southwest's mining heritage.
Today, Terlingua maintains a small but distinct artistic community and is known for hosting the annual International Chili Championship. The town's remaining historic buildings, including the Perry Mansion and the Terlingua Cemetery, serve as reminders of its mining past, while its desert location provides a unique backdrop for cultural activities and historical exploration.
