Uruma is a city located in the central part of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The city was formed in 2005 through the merger of four towns: Gushikawa, Ishikawa, Katsuren, and Yonashiro.
Uruma's landscape features both coastal areas along the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea, as well as historical sites that reflect the region's rich cultural heritage. The city is home to several significant historical landmarks, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site Katsuren Castle ruins, which dates back to the 12th-15th centuries during the Ryukyu Kingdom period. The area maintains strong connections to traditional Okinawan culture, including its distinctive music, dance, and crafts.
Today, Uruma serves as both a residential area and a cultural center, balancing modern development with the preservation of its historical and cultural assets.
