Winton is a historic outback town in central western Queensland, Australia. Known as the 'Dinosaur Capital of Australia', the area around Winton has yielded significant paleontological discoveries, including some of Australia's most important dinosaur fossils.
The town also holds cultural significance as the birthplace of Australia's unofficial national anthem, 'Waltzing Matilda', written by Banjo Paterson in 1895 at the nearby Dagworth Station. This outback community has a rich pastoral heritage and played an important role in the early development of Qantas Airways, with some of the airline's first board meetings held here.
The region's natural landscape features Mitchell grass downs and striking Channel Country, characteristic of Queensland's outback. Today, Winton continues to celebrate its unique blend of prehistoric natural history, pastoral heritage, and cultural significance through various museums and cultural institutions.
