Brussels arose around a castle around the 11th century on an island in the Zenne river. The city to Flanders, both culturally and historically, but ‘frenchified’ in the 19th and early 20th century. Because of this, Brussels belongs to the Flemish cultural region, but is French its dominant language. But because of all the European and international institutions located there, Brussels has an international feel.
