Exhibition 'BE-TEKEN-EN' in Koppelkerk - art & culture

From May 8 through June 28, artists Maron Hilverda and Jeanette Hoekstra will present the exhibition BE-TEKEN-EN at the Koppelkerk in Bredevoort. This exhibition, part of an exchange between the artistsโ€™ collective Breekijzer and Platform Deventer Kunstenaars, explores the relationship between drawing and meaning.

The exhibition BE-TEKEN-EN consists of monumental drawings that the artists create directly on the walls of the various spaces on the upper floor of the Koppelkerk. Hilverda and Hoekstra each begin with a drawing from which the exhibition expands organically. The wall drawings are complemented by various processed materials, thereby creating a total installation.

In a dynamic interplay, Hilverda and Hoekstra respond to one another and elicit meaning, both for themselves and for the viewer. The artists draw inspiration for this project from humanityโ€™s earliest traces: prehistoric cave drawings. But they are also motivated by the origins of drawing, in which the drawing functions as a medium through which deep-rooted meanings and feelings are transformed into meaning. In addition, the artists are inspired by insights from biosemiotics: the theory that all living systemsโ€”from humans to animals and plantsโ€”create and exchange meaning through signs.

With BE-TEKEN-EN, Hilverda and Hoekstra emphasize the timeless power of drawing as a means of giving and sharing meaning.
