Exhibition 'Loki, lives and loves of a master painter' in MOW I Museum Westerwolde
Thirty years after his death, the MOW presents an exhibition about the life and work of the fine painter Lodewijk “Loki” Bruckman (1903–1995).
Bruckman and his partner Evert Zeeven lived for some time opposite the museum in the 1980s and donated a series of paintings to the former municipality of Bellingwedde, now part of the museum collection.
Magical realist
Over time, Bruckman’s work has lost none of its power. The colors are just as vivid as when he mixed them himself with oil paint. His compositions still evoke a sense of wonder. The longer you stand in front of a painting, the more details you notice. The hairs of a rope, the delicate lines of a feather, the frayed edge of a piece of fabric… they are painted as if you could lift them straight off the canvas.
In terms of content, you wander among symbols of growth and stillness, opportunities and reversals, and life and death. “From what perishes, something new always arises” was, not without reason, the artist’s motto.
Interpretations
In addition to Bruckman’s originals, you will also find works by contemporary artists who allowed themselves to be inspired by him especially for this exhibition. You will see installations, paintings, prints, and drawings by Sacha van Aarde, Margot Brekelmans, Shiv Fernando, Frans van Hoek, Sandra Kip, Mia Meijers, Merve Namidar, Dineke Oosting, Tineke Otten, Theo Overgaauw, Caroline Penris, August Robin Peters, Willem van de Sanden, and Brenda Vonk Noordegraaf.
