Exhibition 'Tot stof zult gij wederkeren | You shall return to dust' in Koppelkerk - art & culture

From January 9 to February 15, the Koppelkerk in Bredevoort will host the exhibition ‘You shall return to dust’. This project by Marjoke van de Plassche, Thea Zweerink, and Karen van Dooren of the Breekijzer artists' collective refers to processes of transience and what emerges from them.

The exhibition ‘To dust you shall return’ shows the biological and spiritual life cycles of creatures and the revaluation of working with dust - in all its forms. It also includes religious myths, the support that people found in giving meaning to their lives.

Fragments of a new story
Marjoke van de Plassche, Thea Zweerink, and Karen van Dooren are inspired in their artistry by stories that tell what has been or what could be. The meaning that people give to their experiences, shaped by what they see and feel. In their artistry, they feel a kinship through the use of materials to evoke experiences in the viewer.

During the working period, they drew inspiration from the title, materials, and each other, working towards an exhibition. Dust is a powdery material that has been something or that remains after an event. Dust is also textile. Dust is also an abstract idea, think of ‘food for thought’. Dust always has a meaning that refers to history and meaning.

For the Koppelkerk, formerly a place where people celebrated rituals and life stories together and found a form of meaning, they are showing the results of their research in an exhibition entitled ‘To dust you shall return’. Together, they create fragments of a new story through which the viewer can move.
