Exhibition 'Van meester tot leerling | From master to student' in Koppelkerk - art & culture

From September 19 to November 2, 2025, the Koppelkerk in Bredevoort will host the exhibition “From master to student.” Artist and former art teacher Hans Sennema is eighty years old and is celebrating this with two of his former students: Erik Jan Kwakkel and Selma van Panhuis. The exhibition shows that the master can inspire the student, but that the reverse is also true.

Development
The teacher has been trained to inspire students to engage in visual arts. They also plant a seed that can grow into a love of art. Getting acquainted with art, visual arts, and learning to look contributes to their development as human beings.
The teacher is able to guide the student in this development by being visually creative themselves. They must be able to help the student find their own visual path by offering many different working methods and techniques with which the students can express their vision, their dreams, and their worldview. At school, in the classroom, the teacher is not primarily an artist, but a guide in a process. Mastery in working with different materials and techniques is an important resource for the teacher. Hans Sennema's visual work is very diverse, partly as a result of this. This suggests that working as a visual arts teacher also contributes to the artistic development of the teacher.

Erik Jan Kwakkel was born in Delfzijl in 1965. He grew up in Aalten and studied 3D Design (now Product Design) at the Arnhem Academy of Art (now Artez) in the 1980s.

Selma van Panhuis was born in 1980 and grew up in Aalten. She studied Art & Culture at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, then Fine Art at the Art Academy in The Hague, and subsequently took a Masterclass at the Art Academy in Leipzig.
