Exhibition 'Meester Straaijer & Zn: Watercolors and gouaches' in Koppelkerk - art & culture
From Friday, February 20, an exhibition of watercolors and gouaches by father and son Straaijer will be on display in the upper room of the Koppelkerk in Bredevoort. Lex Straaijer took the initiative to honor his father's work posthumously with an exhibition.
Jan Straaijer
Born in Rotterdam, Jan already showed a talent for drawing in primary school. Throughout the turbulent years, painting and drawing remained very important to him, alongside his work as a teacher. This exhibition features watercolors from the 1950s onwards. From 1964 to 1985, Jan Straaijer was headmaster of the primary school in Barlo near Aalten. Parallel to the exhibition at the Koppelkerk, this school displays works created together with the boys during craft lessons.
Lex Straaijer
Son Lex began his activities in the visual arts in 1984, when he started exhibiting graphic collages at the โDe Krabbedansโ Arts Center in Eindhoven. For Lex, too, drawing always played a role alongside his work as a physicist at ASML and mathematics teacher at Fontys University of Applied Sciences. One of his special activities is โspeed paintingโ, often during open-air events. This involves painting a person from head to toe in about 12 minutes; quick notes that require great concentration.
