Literature has also been important in the country, with the years around 1800 being the classical period in German literature with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller and a little later also the Brothers Grimm.

The Cologne Cathedral is the most popular landmark in Germany, with the Neuschwanstein Castle and the Frauenkirche in Dresden as second and third and both not on the World Heritage List.
