The Museo del Calamar Gigante, also known as the Giant Squid Museum, is a unique natural history museum situated in Luarca, Asturias, Spain. It is the only museum in the world dedicated to the giant squid, making it a unique destination for those interested in marine life and natural history. The museum houses one of the world's most significant collections of large cephalopods, including the largest collection of giant squid on public display.
The Giant Squid Museum was first opened to the public in 2010. However, it suffered significant damage due to storms in the same year and again in 2014. After a period of closure and relocation plans, the museum was finally reopened on 15 July 2022. The new location is a repurposed former nightclub, adding a unique touch to the museum's history and setting.
The collection of the Giant Squid Museum began with the arrival of the first specimen in Luarca in 1997. Over the years, the collection has grown and now includes eleven giant squid specimens and three specimens of Taningia danae, also known as the Dana octopus squid. This extensive collection provides a unique opportunity for visitors to learn about these fascinating creatures and their natural habitats.
