Giant Squid Museum and its collection

Giant Squid Museum
Source

The Giant Squid Museum, situated in Luarca, Asturias, Spain, is a unique natural history museum that focuses on the giant squid and other large cephalopods. It is the only museum in the world dedicated to the giant squid, making it a unique destination for those interested in marine life. The museum houses one of the world's most important collections of large cephalopods, including the largest collection of giant squid on public display.

History and Reopening of the Museum

The Giant Squid Museum first opened its doors in 2010, but was unfortunately damaged by storms later that year and again in 2014. After a period of closure and uncertainty about its future, the museum was successfully relocated and reopened on 15 July 2022. The new location is a former nightclub, providing a unique and spacious setting for the museum's extensive collection.

The Museum's Collection

The collection of the Giant Squid Museum began with the arrival of the first specimen in Luarca in 1997. Since then, the collection has grown significantly, making it one of the most comprehensive collections of giant squid and other large cephalopods in the world. The museum's collection is a testament to the rich marine life in the waters around Asturias and the ongoing efforts to study and preserve these fascinating creatures.
