Source

The Cinema Museum - Tomàs Mallol Collection is situated in the heart of Girona, Spain. The building housing the museum is a part of the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia, adding to its historical significance. The museum offers a journey through 400 years of the history of moving images, making it a fascinating destination for those interested in the evolution of visual arts and cinema.

The Tomàs Mallol Collection

The permanent exhibition at the Cinema Museum is based on the Tomàs Mallol Collection. This collection, gathered over more than thirty years by Tomàs Mallol and acquired by the Girona City Council in 1994, is one of the most important collections of its kind worldwide. It includes a wide range of cinematographic and pre-cinematographic objects that provide a comprehensive overview of the history of cinema.

Organization of the Cinema Museum

The Cinema Museum is organized into several areas, each focusing on a different aspect of the history of cinema. These include the Shadow Theater, which is the most remote precedent of shows with moving images on a screen; the Magic Lantern, a precursor to cinema as a technique and visual spectacle; Optical Boxes, which allowed viewers to see distant cities and landscapes; Photography, which replaced the painter with chemistry; Animated Image, which demonstrated the illusion of movement; and the definitive race towards cinema, which covers the frantic efforts of scientists and inventors to create a device for projecting moving photographic images.

Located in a former convent, the museum showcases the history of cinema and photography from the 19th century to the present day. Visitors appreciate the extensive collection of vintage cameras, projectors, and other cinematic equipment. The museum's interactive exhibits, including the opportunity to create your own short film, are particularly popular among guests. Many reviewers highlight the knowledgeable staff and well-organized displays. However, some visitors mention that the museum is relatively small and can be explored thoroughly in about an hour. A few reviewers note that while the content is interesting, more English translations would be helpful for international tourists. Despite these minor drawbacks, the Cinema Museum is generally well-received for its educational value and the nostalgic atmosphere it creates for cinema lovers.
