The Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park is situated in the city of Gáldar, which is in the northwest of the island of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. This location is a significant part of the Culture, Historical Heritage and Museums Council of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.

Significance of the Cueva Pintada

The Cueva Pintada, which was discovered in the 19th century, serves as a magnificent example of the artistic representations of the ancient aborigines of Gran Canaria. The cave is on volcanic material, and its walls are decorated with geometric motifs. Archaeologists believe that due to the regular distribution of these (usually in series of twelve), it could be a kind of calendar.

Reopening of the Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park

The Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park was reopened on July 26, 2006, after more than 20 years of recovery work on the site. Until that time, only a reproduction of the paintings could be seen at the Canarian Museum in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
