And discover also the museum’s rich collection of art from the 1880s to the present day, with works by Piet Mondriaan, Charley Toorop and Rineke Dijkstra. Come and enjoy Haarlem’s 16th- and 17th-century, modern and contemporary art in two beautiful historical buildings in the old city centre. The 17th-century former home for elderly men on Groot Heiligland features attractive galleries, intimate regents’ rooms, an 18th-century doll’s house and a wonderful courtyard. See famous works by Frans Hals alongside other old, modern and contemporary art. Picture yourself centuries ago in the very place where Frans Hals himself may once have walked. The Frans Hals Museum presents exhibitions of modern and contemporary art at the 17th-century Vleeshal, the former meat market on Grote Markt. The two locations are about seven minutes’ walk apart and one museum ticket is valid for both.

Frans Hals Museum HAL (Grote Markt 16) has 1 rating.
The Frans Hals Museum HAL, located in the heart of Haarlem at Grote Markt 16, offers visitors a compelling journey through Dutch art history. This branch of the museum, focused on modern and contemporary art, complements the historical collections found at the main location.
Visitors often praise the museum's thoughtful curation, which creates interesting dialogues between contemporary pieces and the city's rich artistic heritage. The exhibitions are frequently rotated, ensuring that there's always something new to discover, even for repeat visitors. The museum's location in a beautifully restored historic building adds to its charm and provides an atmospheric backdrop for the artworks.
Many reviewers appreciate the museum's manageable size, allowing for a thorough exploration without feeling overwhelming. The staff is generally described as friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing the overall experience with their insights.
However, some visitors note that the museum's focus on contemporary art may not appeal to everyone, especially those expecting a more traditional Dutch Golden Age experience. Additionally, a few reviewers mention that the information provided about some exhibits could be more comprehensive, particularly for international visitors.
The museum's efforts to engage visitors through interactive elements and multimedia presentations are largely well-received, though occasionally described as a bit sparse. The gift shop, while small, offers a good selection of art-related items and books.
Overall, the Frans Hals Museum HAL is viewed as a valuable addition to Haarlem's cultural landscape, offering a fresh perspective on art that complements the city's more traditional offerings. It's particularly recommended for those interested in seeing how contemporary artists engage with Dutch artistic traditions.
