The Gevangenismuseum is housed in a former ‘Dwanggesticht’ from the 19th century. In an interactive way, the visitor learns about how criminals were treated in the Netherlands from 1600 to the present. In addition, the museum covers the history of Veenhuizen as a prison town. Important in the museum is a ‘radbraakkruis’ from the 17th century and a wooden rack. Every Wednesday and Sunday afternoon a ‘boevenbus’ drives around the museum.

Het Gevangenismuseum has 4 ratings.
Het Gevangenismuseum, located in Veenhuizen, the Netherlands, offers visitors an insightful look into the history of the Dutch penal system. The museum is housed in a former prison, which adds to its authenticity and atmosphere. Visitors appreciate the well-preserved buildings and the extensive collection of artifacts that illustrate the evolution of incarceration practices over time.
The museum provides a balanced perspective on prison life, showcasing both historical and modern aspects. Many reviewers praise the interactive exhibits, which allow guests to experience what it might have felt like to be a prisoner. The audio guide, available in multiple languages, is often mentioned as a valuable addition to the tour, providing detailed information and context.
One of the highlights frequently mentioned is the opportunity to visit actual cells and see how prisoners lived in different eras. The museum also touches on the social context of crime and punishment, which many visitors find thought-provoking.
Some visitors note that the museum can be quite somber due to its subject matter, which might not be suitable for young children or sensitive individuals. A few reviewers mention that some areas of the museum could benefit from more English translations, as not all information is available in languages other than Dutch.
The museum's location in the unique village of Veenhuizen, with its history as a penal colony, adds an extra layer of interest for many visitors. The surrounding area, with its other historical buildings and nature, is often recommended for exploration after visiting the museum.
Overall, Het Gevangenismuseum is generally well-regarded for its educational value, historical significance, and the immersive experience it provides. While it may not be a light-hearted visit, it offers a comprehensive and engaging look at an important aspect of social history.
