The Musée de la métallurgie ardennaise (M.M.A.) is a museum located in Bogny-sur-Meuse, in an old industrial building. It is dedicated to the history of metallurgy in the Meuse valley, in Ardennes. The museum showcases the deep impact of metalwork and transformation on the landscape and urban fabric in the northern part of the Ardennes department, which has marked several generations and still employs tens of thousands of people today.
The museum is housed in an old industrial building, facing the rocks of the Four sons of Aymon. The visit begins with a video presenting testimonies of employees or former employees of metallurgical companies, sharing their professional career, their memories, and the technical skills they acquired. Despite the difficult working conditions in production, such as noise and odors, their attachment to the profession is evident.
The museum presents the evolution of processes and machines in a series of stands, from small artisan workshops to industrial workshop installations. The entrance features a striking reenactment of a nailer's workshop, complete with images of a dog triggering a wheel that sets the bellows of a forge in motion. The humble origins of emblematic bosses from the transition from artisanal to industrial mode are also highlighted, as well as their management style.
