MUTEK, the only art museum at a station in the Netherlands The Netherlands has gained a remarkable museum. MUTEK, an acronym for Museum of Applied European Art. Without realizing it, applied art is an art form that is part of the daily life around us. After all, all the products we use are designed. This makes it an important art form that deserves a dedicated museum, just like in other European countries. The museum is situated in a very special location: the former second-class waiting room of Haarlem station. The old waiting room is an artistic expression from the early 20th century and is also strongly connected to the industrial era: after all, the first train in our country ran in Haarlem starting in 1839! The current Haarlem station was designed in 1905 by Dirk Margadant and Jac van den Bosch and is full of references to the Modern Era. For instance, coats of arms (including that of Amsterdam) have been displayed in the waiting room representing places located along the old line, the Amsterdam-Rotterdam route. The museum boasts a collection of international quality. The current exhibition on 120 years of applied art features art movements such as Art Nouveau / Jugendstil, Nieuwe Kunst, Wiener Werkstรคtte, Art Deco, the Amsterdam School, Streamline, Space Age, and Memphis Design. The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00. Information: mutekmuseum.nl
