Yates County History Center and its collection

The Yates County Genealogical and Historical Society is responsible for the operation of the Yates History Center, a collection of three distinct museums located in the village of Penn Yan, New York. These include the Oliver House Museum, a 19th-century period house; the L. Caroline Underwood Museum, which showcases historic decorative arts items and displays of local history; and the Scherer Carriage House, which features exhibits about a local evangelist known as the Public Universal Friend.

The Oliver House Museum: A Glimpse into the 19th Century

The Oliver House Museum, a significant part of the Yates History Center, was originally built in 1852 and was later bequeathed to the village of Penn Yan by the Oliver family. Over the years, it has served as a venue for various organizations. Today, it operates as a museum, preserving many of the original furnishings and portraits from the Oliver family. In addition to these permanent displays, the museum also hosts changing exhibits.

The L. Caroline Underwood Museum and Research Center: A Year-Round Historical Resource

The L. Caroline Underwood Museum, another part of the Yates History Center, is open to visitors all year round. In partnership with the Yates County Genealogical and Historical Society, the museum features both changing and permanent exhibits. Additionally, it houses the Catherine A. Spencer Research Center, a valuable resource for those interested in publications, genealogical information, and various topics related to Yates County history.

The Yates County History Center in Penn Yan, United States, offers visitors an insightful look into the local heritage of the area. The center consists of multiple buildings, including the L. Caroline Underwood Museum, the Oliver House Museum, and the Scherer Carriage House, each providing a different aspect of the region's history.

Visitors often appreciate the well-preserved artifacts and exhibits that showcase the area's past, from Native American history to early settler life and beyond. The staff is frequently praised for their knowledge and friendliness, enhancing the overall experience with informative tours and engaging stories about local history.

The center's strength lies in its ability to present a comprehensive view of Yates County's development over time. Many guests find the displays of vintage clothing, household items, and agricultural tools particularly interesting, as they offer a tangible connection to the past.

However, some visitors note that the center might benefit from updated signage and more interactive exhibits to appeal to a broader audience, especially younger visitors. Additionally, the opening hours are sometimes mentioned as limited, which can be inconvenient for some tourists.
