Penn Yan is a village located in Yates County in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The village's name is derived from its early settlers who came from Pennsylvania ("Penn") and New England, many of whom were Yankees ("Yan").
Founded in 1799, Penn Yan serves as the county seat of Yates County and is situated at the north end of the east branch of Keuka Lake, one of the Finger Lakes. The village has a rich historical heritage reflected in its well-preserved 19th-century architecture, particularly along Main Street.
The area's cultural identity is closely tied to its agricultural roots, particularly in wine production, as it is part of the Finger Lakes wine region. Penn Yan has maintained its small-town character while serving as a regional center for commerce, tourism, and cultural activities in the Finger Lakes area.
