Alkmaar is een stad in de Nederlandse provincie Noord-Holland. De stad ligt in een typisch Hollands polderlandschap, dichtbij een natuurgebied met veel water, duinen, strand en bos. In 1254 kreeg de stad stadsrechten en diende toen voornamelijk als grensvesting en uitvalsbasis in de strijd tegen de West-Friezen. De historische binnenstad kenmerkt zich door oude grachten met karakteristieke ophaalbruggen, panden uit de 16e tot de 19e eeuw en kleine straatjes en hofjes. In de binnenstad zijn veel bijzondere winkeltjes, kleine ambachtelijke bedrijfjes, eet- en drinkgelegenheden en galerieën. De stad staat bekend als ‘de kaasstad’ en heeft van april tot september nog wekelijks een traditionele kaasmarkt in de binnenstad voor de Waag. Een traditie die nu al zo’n 400 jaar oud is.
