Auvers-sur-Oise is a picturesque commune located in the northwestern suburbs of Paris. The town gained significant cultural importance in the 19th century when it became a favorite destination for numerous Impressionist painters, most notably Vincent van Gogh, who spent the last months of his life here in 1890. The town's scenic beauty, with its church, wheat fields, and rustic houses, was captured in many of Van Gogh's final paintings.
Charles-François Daubigny, one of the first artists to settle in Auvers, helped establish it as an artists' colony. The town also attracted other prominent painters such as Paul Cézanne, Camille Pissarro, and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot.
Today, Auvers-sur-Oise maintains much of its historical character and serves as an important destination for those interested in art history, particularly the Impressionist movement. The town's connection to Van Gogh is commemorated through various sites, including the Auberge Ravoux where he lived his final days, and the cemetery where both Vincent and his brother Theo are buried.
