Bernissart is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Hainaut, known internationally for its remarkable paleontological significance. In 1878, coal miners made an extraordinary discovery of multiple complete Iguanodon dinosaur skeletons, now known as Iguanodon bernissartensis, in the deep coal mines of the area. These fossils, dating back to the Early Cretaceous period (about 125 million years ago), represent one of the most important dinosaur discoveries in Europe. The specimens are now housed in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels.
Besides its paleontological heritage, Bernissart has a history rooted in coal mining, which was a crucial industry in the region until the mid-20th century. Today, the municipality maintains its historical character while serving as a reminder of Belgium's rich geological and industrial past.
