Carbonia is a city located in the province of South Sardinia, on the Italian island of Sardinia. Founded in 1938 during the Fascist period, it was established as a model mining town to house workers of the nearby coal mines, which gave the city its name. The city's architecture and urban planning reflect the rationalist style of the 1930s, with notable examples of Italian modernist design.
Today, while the mines are no longer operational, Carbonia preserves its industrial heritage through various cultural institutions, including the Coal Mining Museum of Serbariu, which is housed in the former mining complex. The city serves as an important example of 20th-century planned industrial settlements and offers insights into Italy's mining history and architectural development during the interwar period.
