Chipping Ongar is a historic market town located in the county of Essex, England. The name "Chipping" comes from the Old English word "cēping," meaning market or trading place, reflecting its historical role as a market town.
The town's history dates back to Saxon times, and it was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The town center retains much of its medieval street pattern and features several buildings of historical significance, including the remains of an 11th-century Norman castle motte and St Martin's Church, which dates from the 11th century with later additions. While relatively small, the town maintains its distinctive character through its preserved architecture and local heritage sites.
In recent years, Chipping Ongar has become known for its heritage railway, the Epping Ongar Railway, which operates on former London Underground tracks and serves as a cultural attraction preserving railway history.
