The area was originally inhabited by the Awabakal people, and the name "Cooranbong" is believed to be derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "rocky bottom creek" or "water over rocks." The town retains much of its natural beauty, surrounded by Australian bushland and situated near Lake Macquarie, Australia's largest coastal saltwater lake.
