Coupeville is a historic waterfront town located on Whidbey Island in Washington state. Founded in the 1850s, it is the second-oldest town in Washington and serves as the county seat of Island County. The town is situated on Penn Cove, known for its shellfish cultivation, particularly the famous Penn Cove mussels.
Coupeville's historic district features well-preserved 19th-century architecture, with many buildings dating back to the town's early settlement period. The area was originally inhabited by the Lower Skagit Native American tribes and later became an important center for maritime trade and agriculture. Today, Coupeville is part of the Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, which preserves the cultural landscape of central Whidbey Island and reflects both Native American and European-American settlement history.
