Fontevraud-l'Abbaye is a small commune in western France, primarily known for its historic Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, one of the largest surviving monasteries from the Middle Ages. Founded in 1101, this remarkable abbey was the burial place of several Plantagenet kings and queens of England, including Richard the Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitaine.
The monastery complex, which is now a cultural center and museum, showcases exceptional Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The village itself, with its medieval streets and limestone buildings, grew around the abbey and reflects the rich historical heritage of the Loire Valley region.
Today, Fontevraud-l'Abbaye continues to be an important cultural destination, blending its religious and royal history with contemporary arts and cultural initiatives.
